Preparation Guide for a Bride's Wedding Makeup and Hair

Here at Autelier, we understand that wedding preparation can be a stressful process with lots of preparation to be done. But not to worry, here are some helpful guidelines to keep in mind to ensure that you will be all ready for our makeup artists to doll you up.

Hair must be completely dry when our makeup artist arrives for the makeup session. If hair is damp, our makeup artist will require additional time to blow dry your hair resulting in a delay in the completion time.

Furthermore, damp hair is harder to curl, and the curls will not last for long in our humid weather.

It is not recommended to wash your hair in the morning of the actual day. However, if it is a must to wash your hair in the morning, hair should be completely dry upon arrival of our makeup artist.

Lastly, do not use hair conditioner when washing your hair the night before your wedding. Hair products such as hair oil and serums are not recommended to be applied. Drier hair works best for styling purposes!

Prior to the makeup session, it is recommended to gently exfoliate your skin to reveal a smooth, radiant complexion.

This will also ensure easy absorption of the products layered on your skin afterwards. Follow up with a hydrating face mask to hydrate your skin for the best makeup effect. Remember to wash your face after removing the mask!

To avoid interference with our makeup application, do refrain from applying any sunscreen or moisturiser. Too oily moisturisers will result in your foundation melting faster.

For brides with sensitive skin, do inform our makeup artist in advance. Should you prefer to use your own makeup or skincare products to avoid allergies, you can always have them on hand.

There should be a table surface for our makeup artist to place her cosmetics makeup train case and equipment.

Do also have a desk mirror to check your hair and makeup once it is completed. This will ensure that you will be fully satisfied with your look and if not, refinements can be made.

For optimal lighting conditions, it is advisable for the makeup session to be done under natural lighting. If the room is too dimly lighted, table lamps are highly recommended.

In your cosmetics bag, do prepare either a compact powder or loose powder for touch-ups throughout the day. Especially in Singapore’s hot weather, this will prevent your makeup from shifting around.

We recommend the Innisfree No Sebum Mineral Powder for fuss-free touch-ups and it works really well at mattifying your face. Don’t forget your favourite lipstick as well!

Prior to the makeup session, do change into your appropriate lingerie like Nubra. Bathrobes or open button tops should be worn as well to ensure fuss-free changing into your wedding dress.

To ensure that your skin is properly hydrated, it would be good to put on a hydrating sleeping mask for the night. Alternatively, you can also use your night cream according to your preference.

It is also advisable to not drink too much water the night before. This might result in puffy eyes or water retention in the face the morning after. Most importantly, do get as much sleep as possible to be fresh for your big day!

Having these tips in mind will ensure that you look your best on the most important and special day of your life.

With that, we hope that these guidelines have been helpful for you in knowing how you can prepare yourself for your big day. Last but not least, our team at Autelier Makeup would like to wish you a wonderful wedding and a blissful marriage ahead!

Overseas Prewedding in Xinjiang, China #preweddingtravels

This series of #preweddingtravels will highlight the pre-wedding photoshoot experiences of the lovely couples we have worked with. For our first post, let us bring you along to Xinjiang featuring the couple Andrea and Yexi.

For many, Xinjiang might not be the first destination in mind to capture beautiful wedding shots. However, Xinjiang proves to be a picturesque option and could be one of the best kept travel secrets. And we must say that Andrea and Yexi being adventurous people, it was no surprise that they chose this unique destination for their pre-wedding shoot.

Just a heads up, as with most Central Asian regions, the country tends to be more wary of foreigners. We underwent a few passport checks as part of their security precautionary measures.

Day 1: Kumtag Desert

Our first stop was the Kumtag Desert located in Shanshan. Kumtag ("kum tagh" in Uighur) translates to sand mountain. As Shanshan itself experiences low frequency of rainfall, that day was one of the rare occasions that we experienced rainy conditions. However, we were lucky that the rain was not too heavy that would hamper us from proceeding with the photoshoot. The shoot was conducted in the late afternoon with plans of capturing the beautiful sunset in the desert.

As temperature in the desert took a dip, the journey in the desert was pretty challenging as Andrea braved through the chilly weather without a jacket. But this did not faze the bride one bit as she ascended up the sand dunes for her shots. The beautiful custom-made wedding gown by Jessicacindy draped beautifully over the sand dunes, and it was a stunning sight to behold.

The hairstyle done by our makeup artist Sarah was soft, effortless waves to complement the dreamy wedding gown.

The happiness experienced by the blissful couple was perfectly captured by Felicia from AndroidsinBoots. She translated these happy moments into picture perfect memories.

As evening approached, we were greeted with the stunning sight of the sunset. The rain had subsided, and the couple couldn’t be happier to witness the sunset according to plan. This was definitely the highlight of the day and a perfect way to end the day.

Day 2: Urumqi Nanshan

The next day, we set off to Urumqi Nanshan (which translates to “Southern Pastures” or “Southern Mountains”). The scenery was reminiscent of a winter portrait with the lush pine trees surrounding the mountains and roadside.

Halfway through, it was unfortunate that Andrea faced a little stomach discomfort. However, she fought through it with Yexi’s unconditional support and remained really optimistic!

Here are some pictures from behind the scenes. Behind the glamour of each photo, there was a great amount of effort and thought put into it!

Aside from that, one memorable incident definitely made this trip an unforgettable one for Sarah. On the team’s journey to catch the train back to Urumqi, their van tire punctured, and they got held up for close to an hour! But thankfully, the traffic police officers stopped by to lend them a helping hand. They were incredibly kind and offered their spare tire to the van driver as he did not have one. Before leaving, the officers even told the driver to drive safely and ensure they reach their destination safely.

For couples that are looking to travel to Xinjiang for your pre-wedding photoshoot, Sarah strongly recommends you to engage in good planning. This is especially so if you are not familiar with the place. Yexi and Andrea did an excellent job in their planning and the team was really blessed to have engaged a really good travel agency to bring them around.

Last but not least, a big thank you to the wonderful team for making the shoot a success! It was our utmost pleasure to be a part of the couple’s wedding journey by providing them our hair and makeup services. As the quote goes: “happiness looks great on you.” Hence, our hair and makeup looks are only complete when they are worn by beaming, blissful brides!

Important tips for your Wedding Trial Makeup & Hairstyling

A trial for your bridal makeup and hairstyling is a must in my opinion, especially if you are not not used to wearing makeup most of the time. It is after all the one of the most important day of your life and you will want to look your very best.

There are alot of considerations when planning for the perfect wedding look and you will want to be fully prepared for trial makeup session with your makeup artist to make it a fruitful session.

When to do your trial makeup and hairstyling ?

This is one common question we get asked very often - when should I do my trial?  It is a very good question and should be addressed. There are 2 purposes to a trial makeup session and the purpose determine when you should be doing the trial.

The first purpose to a trial is to find out if a particular wedding makeup artist style fits what you are looking for. If this is the case, you should do this as early as possible to decide if the makeup artist style fits your liking.

If you are certain of the makeup artist you want to hire, then your purpose will be the second category, which is to determine the kind of wedding makeup and hairstyling you desire for your wedding actual day. For this scenario, trial is usually recommended to be done 2-4 weeks before your wedding day. Reason for this is that you would have confirmed your gown, your hair length and face condition is also similar to your wedding day.

Now, here are some tips for your wedding makeup and hairstyling trial session:

Research and communicate your likes and dislikes

It is best to do some research on your preferences on the kind of styles you like. Are you looking for a minimalist style, a boho-chic or a hollywood glamour style? Do you prefer more clean & sleek looking hairstyle or romantic braided wedding hairstyles?

These are questions you will need to consider and communicate with your makeup artist. With the ease of access to abundance of images on social media, it is best to illustrate your preferences with pictures.

Wear a color and neckline similar to your wedding dress

Sometimes clients come for a trial makeup session in a T-shirt and it is very hard to visualise the whole look. It is always advisable to come in a top that is close to the color and neckline of your wedding dress so that it is easier for you to visualise. If your wedding gown and evening dress are ready for collection, you can bring them along for your trial session. You can get a very good feel of the overall look.

Prepare pictures of your wedding gowns and evening dresses.
In order for us to give better advise on the kind of bridal makeup and hairstyling that is suitable for you, it is very helpful to show us pictures of your wedding gown and evening dresses.

Theme of wedding

The theme of your wedding determines how we would advise on the looks. For example, if it is a beach wedding, we would recommend a let down romantic style whereas for a solemn church wedding will usually goes well with a clean updo with veil. So do share with us the theme of your wedding, the venue as well as the programme for the day.

Come with cleanly washed hair with no conditioner

While you may be tempted to come with very smooth and silky hair, you might be surprised to know that it is actually the least ideal for styling. This is because hair that is too soft and silky is hard to style and curls doesn't last long. As such, it is recommended not to use any conditioner, hair oil or serum. It is not necessary to cut or color your hair before the trial as our makeup artist will advise on what cut is suitable for the hairstyles you have chosen.

Come with Bare face

Do come bare face with your contact lenses on if you intend to wear them on the day of your wedding. It is fine to come with sunblock on.

Choose the right person  for your trial

If you intend to bring someone for your trial makeup to give you a second opinion, we encourage you to do so. However do choose someone whom you think have similar taste as you in terms of styling. And do not bring too many people as you might end up with too many opinions and eventually find it hard to decide.

Give some thoughts on the accessories and veil

Before coming to the trial, do also check with your bridal studio on the selection of bridal veils available for use on your wedding day. This will be part of the consideration when we are proposing a wedding hairstyle too.

We do not recommend purchasing hair accessories before the bridal hair trial unless you really fancy certain piece and we will work your wedding hairstyle to complement the hair accessories. We work closely with Gioielli ( in coming up with the perfect style. Clients can choose from ready made pieces in our studio or have their hair pieces custom- made by Helen herself.

Leave your makeup on

We propose for you to leave the makeup on for a period of time.

This is to test how long the makeup last, how long the curls stays in the humid Singapore weather. Take mental note of areas that you will like the makeup artist to make adjustments and communicate with your makeup artist. This will ensure your makeup stay fresh and more lasting on your big day.
